Last season was a frustrating one to say the least for Jordy Mercer. The Pirates shortstop, known for his defense, could not match that intensity to the offensive side of the game and missed significant time with a left leg injury. The day has come, baseball fans. Spring Training is officially upon us as pitchers and catchers -- with a handful of position players -- took part in the teams first workout of the 2014 season. All 36 pitchers and catchers invited to spring training were in attendance while position players Chase d'Arnaud, Chris McGuiness, Jordy Mercer, Neil Walker, Jaff Decker, Jose Tabata and Gaby Sanchez attended as well. With opening day just a few weeks away, it's time for the Pirates roster to start taking shape. This morning, the Pirates made their first cuts of spring training. The most notable cuts were their No. 2 prospect Jameson Taillon and one of the players in the Joel Hanrahan deal, Jerry Sands.
