The Pittsburgh Steelers added some quarterback depth on Friday by signing former Clemson star Tajh Boyd.
Boyd was selected by the New York Jets in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, but did not make the Jets 53-man roster.
After completing 8-of-17 passes for 98 yards and one touchdown in the preseason, Boyd was released and not picked up by another NFL team. He eventually signed a deal with the Florida Blacktips of the FXFL.
Boyd has had workouts with the Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Washington Redskins and most recently the Detroit Lions, but neither franchise offered him a contact.
In four years at Clemson, Boyd throw for 11,904 yards and completed 64.3 percent of his passes to go along with 107 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. While there he had a 38-10 record as a starter and was named the 2012 ACC Player of the Year.
He joins Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones as Steelers quarterbacks under contract.
Boyd’s signing is likely nothing to get excited about and clearly nothing more than a depth move as it will be unlikely that he will be given much of an opportunity to unseat Jones as the Steelers No. 3 quarterback.
