As one of the new members contributing to Pittsburgh Sporting News, I wanted to make a splash with my first story. It is not easy trying to figure out what route I wanted to go. Then Saturday happened …
The site is about Pittsburgh sports, and I am not one who likes to write about himself, but this is too good to pass up. We are talking odds of 12,500 to one good. I had my first ever Hole-in-One. It took place on No. 13 at Grove City Country Club. The hole is 160 yards and it was with a 6-Iron. We are talking the pinnacle of an average golfer’s career. It wasn’t some story like the old Michael Jordan and Larry Bird McDonald’s ad ‘Off the floor, off the scoreboard, off the backboard, nothing but net’; no this was one perfect hop and plunk.
I dreamt about this moment. I knew exactly how I would react when that day happens. Then it happens, and …. Stunned silence. The greatest moment of my sporting career and I didn’t let out a peep. That’s the beauty of 12,500 to one odds. No matter how many times you think about the reaction, you dream about that moment, in reality it’s impossible to know how to react to something that so rarely happens. Best part of that moment is I got to enjoy it with my dad (who also has a hole-in-one). All I remember is that I threw my arms up in the air, turned around with my jaw dragging along the tee box, and the first person there to celebrate was my father. I will never forget that moment.
I bring up that moment to talk about this weekend. The Senior Player’s Championship is taking place this week at Fox Chapel Country Club. I suggest trying to go. I went last year and it’s a great course. Get there early and walk the course. Take pride in the fact that these Professionals wanted to come back to this course. The beautiful part is that this event does not attract the crowds of a PGA event so find your perfect spot and be amazed that these guys are still so good. The slogan “These Guys Are Good” is not just meant for PGA players, the only difference between the PGA and Champions Tour is age. The lineup is chalked full of stars, including our hometown hero, Rocco Mediate.
Take advantage of this opportunity to watch Professionals play in our backyard. The odds of a Professional making a hole-in-one are 2,500 to one. So maybe, just maybe you get to witness that unforgettable moment. Whether you golf or not, no matter the sport of your choice, isn’t watching for those unforgettable moments what it’s all about?
