The Pittsburgh Steelers’ system is like no other, one that can turn late round draftees and undrafted players into superstars. The Pittsburgh Steelers always look for one major asset in the draft – athleticism. We have seen over the years the Steelers draft players with freakish athleticism and talent for one simple reason. The system can teach football.
Furthermore, the Pittsburgh Steelers were up against the cap heading into the 2013 season and were unable to retain three starters. Keenan Lewis, Mike Wallace, and James Harrison. However, when we had to watch these players walk this offseason, we knew that the Steelers’ system would have another viable option ready to go.
Mike Wallace/Antonio Brown: Wallace has blazing speed, but speed is not worth 60 million. In 2012, we watched Antonio Brown quickly become a leader for the Steelers as Brown dealt with a brutal high ankle sprain that would of kept most players off the field. Brown, however only missed three games, hauled in 66 receptions for 787 yards and 5 touchdowns. Antonio Brown is a polished route runner who is very quick, sneaky fast with 4.4 speed, and has tremendous hands. Brown also has the intangibles as being a great locker room guy.
James Harrison/ Jarvis Jones: In my opinion, I still think Harrison should have been retained for one more year. Who better for Jones to learn from than one of the most intimidating players in, James Harrison. However, at the age of 35, the Steelers weren’t going to pay Harrison 6.5 million for his services or lack of. Harrison’ play has been inconsistent, marred by injuries and suspensions. Jarvis Jones has shown great athleticism for an outside linebacker and all arrows point up with his stock as his field vision and unstoppable motor has already been on display. In the short term, Harrison will be missed, but that’s about it.
Keenan Lewis/ Cortez Allen: Keenan Lewis broke out last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers with consistent physical play. Even though Lewis didn’t record an interception, his 23 passes defended were good enough to notch him 2nd in the entire league. In 2012, Cortez Allen allowed just 448 yards and a single touchdown through the air, while picking off two passes and forcing three fumbles. There is still plenty of room for Allen to grow. However, Allen has the ability to re-route receivers due to his lanky and lean muscular frame. With his athletic ability already in place, the Steelers’ system will only make him even more dangerous.
Mike Wallace will be missed for his blazing speed, however Antonio Brown is quicker and has much better hands. James Harrison will be missed for his ferociousness, Jarvis Jones on the other hand could be a Steeler for the next decade. Keenan Lewis is a solid physical defender, Allen showed those same attributes, just with much better hands.
I think all of these players will be missed in the short term, however the Steelers system can teach football as good as anyone and have players ready to go.
