ALCS Game 3: Tigers 2 – Yankees 1
Justin Verlander again showed why he is the best pitcher in baseball as he beat the Yankees while only giving up three hits and no walks in 8 1/3 innings as the Tigers are within a game of the AL Pennant.
Two of the three New York hits came from Ichiro, who singled in the fourth and in the seventh. The Tigers, on the other hand, knocked out seven hits and two runs. They scored the first run off of starter Phil Hughes in the fourth when Delmon Young took him deep to left. Hughes would exit the game with an injury after striking out the next batter. The Tigers would strike again the next inning when Quintin Berry reached on an Eric Chavez fielding error. He would then steal second and score on a Miguel Cabrera ground rule double to make it 2-0. The Yankees would make it interesting in the ninth when Eduardo Nunez led it off with a solo shot to left but that would be all they could get. Verlander passed 130 pitches before getting relieved by Phil Coke. Coke would get the final two outs around a Texiera and Cano single for the save.
Worth noting: A-Rod was not in the starting lineup and didn’t pinch-hit in the ninth when it was a one run game.
