PSAC West Hardwood Moments: Teams find success in home openers
The PSAC West is off to a good start this season. The nine teams have a combined 12-5 record after the first week of play. Seven teams - Clarion, Cal U, IUP, Seton Hill, Edinboro, Slippery Rock and Pitt-Johnstown - won their home openers this past week. Pitt-Johnstown won their home opener on Monday, 88-51 over Penn State-Altoona. Pitt-Johnstown had five players, including two bench players, in double figures. PSAC West Hardwood Moment: Rock, Cal U, Seton Hill open season
Both Slippery Rock and Cal U opened their weekend at the Clarion Hotel Classic hosted by Shepherd University on Saturday and Sunday. Seton Hill also opened their season Saturday. Slippery Rock started their season off with an overtime loss to Charleston (W.Va.), 73-68 on Saturday. Senior center Maurice Lewis-Briggs led the way with 18 points for The Rock. Jordan Grady, three others from PSAC West named to NABC Honors Court
At the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year the National Association of Basketball Coaches names players to their Honors Court. With the conclusion of this school year, four men's basketball players from the PSAC West have been named to the list. Jordan Grady of Slippery Rock University is a 6'4" 215 pound native of Cumberland, Maryland. Seton Hill, Pitt-Johnstown Officially Named Members of the PSAC
A unanimous vote today by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Board of Directors officially accepted the Seton Hill Griffins and Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats as members of the conference. On their acceptance, PSAC Commissioner Steve Murray said, “Adding Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown will undoubtedly bolster the PSAC's reputation on a regional and national scale.” The Griffins and Mountain Cats, formerly of the WVIAC, will join the PSAC West. Leao, Kromka, Renkin named to Winter Top Ten Honorees
The PSAC sports information directors released their Winter Top Ten Honorees this week and three PSAC West basketball players were on it. Among the list were Luis Leao of Mercyhurst, Mike Kromka of Clarion, and Scooter Renkin of IUP. Leao, a first-team Academic All-American, is the only male selected who has received the award before. Yinzer of the Week: Marcel Souberbielle
Last week, Pittsburgh Penguins winger Chris Kunitz took home the Yinzer of the Week for the second straight week. This week, however, he was dethroned by a junior forward from IUP. Even though IUP fell short of advancing in the NCAA D2 Tournament this past weekend, Marcel Souberbielle had a fantastic showing in the three games that IUP played in. IUP falls to West Liberty in Atlantic Region Final
IUP, the last PSAC team left in the Atlantic Region, fell victim to the #1 team in the country Tuesday night in West Liberty, losing 86-63. Chris Morrow and Alex Falk proved to be too much for the Crimson Hawks, as West Liberty shot 53 percent from the floor. IUP kept up on the stat sheet in every statistical category except for shooting percentage. IUP only made five three point shots, compared to West Liberty's 13. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. Despite a late comeback attempt, the IUP Crimson Hawks held off Slippery Rock in the semifinal match-up of the NCAA D2 Men's Basketball Championship, winning 53-50. Slippery Rock was having flashbacks of last night's game, but the outcome didn't measure up to their previous late game upset.
