The last game Andre Marhold started for Duquesne was the January 19th blowout loss against VCU. He hasn’t received more than fifteen minutes of playing time since. Against GW Wednesday night, he was on the court for a mere six minutes. But his playing time had suffered long before this. Marhold has gone from starter to reserve in less than a week. One thing is for certain, he is getting no love from his coach right now. After the George Washington game, Ferry was asked whether or not the ... Read More
Coach Ferry Embarrassed by Team’s Performance in 79-57 Loss
Pittsburgh—Sometimes when you think there is nowhere to go but up, the unthinkable happens. Coming off a nine game losing streak, I’m sure some people around the Duquesne basketball program were thinking such hopelessly positive thoughts before the George Washington game. The end result of the game, however, was another confidence hit for Duquesne’s players and a much-needed apology from Coach Ferry. “I apologize to the fans for having to watch this game, I’m embarrassed. This is the worst ... Read More
Duquesne’s Best Chance of Breaking Losing Streak Arises
Duquesne is set to begin a two-game home stand starting Wednesday against George Washington (10-10, 4-3) at the Palumbo Center and ending this Saturday against Xavier (12-9, 5-3) at Consol Energy Center. The best chance they have of breaking their nine-game losing streak comes against George Washington on Wednesday. There is no question that the Dukes (7-14, 0-7) will be desperate for a win, but some things will need to be done in order for them to maximize their chances of achieving the desired ... Read More
Make it Nine in New York
Duquesne’s losing streak stretched to nine games Saturday night with a 68-60 loss before 4,991 people at the Reilly Center in Olean, NY. Duquesne (7-14, 0-7) remains the only team in the Atlantic 10 without a conference win. Duquesne was plagued by some rough patches early on that eventually lost them the game. They committed 10 turnovers in the first half and failed to complete a 2nd half rally, despite coming to within four with 1:06 to play. Ferry pointed out the turnovers as the main ... Read More
Yinzer of the Week: Tomas Vokoun
Tomas Vokoun was perfect for the Pens this week. With Marc-Andre Fleury struggling late in the game Tuesday night, the Pens put Vokoun in to close out the game. While he only defended seven shots, he saved all seven of them. The Isles were already up comfortable but the late game performance was good enough to get Vokoun the start Thursday night. While in the goal against the Rangers, Vokoun posted another perfect performance. He fought off the Rangers all night, defending and saving all 28 ... Read More
Duquesne Prepares for St. Bonaventure
After a week-long lull in the action, Duquesne (7-13, 0-6) will take on St. Bonaventure (9-10, 2-4) at the Reilly Center on Saturday. The Bonnies have also been idle for the past week and are coming off a 67-57 loss to Saint Louis. The game will be televised locally on Root Sports. St. Bonaventure, like Duquesne has had their share of troubles this season. After a 7-3 start, they fell victim to a six-game losing streak that began before Christmas and carried on into January. They were able to ... Read More
What Exactly is Happening with Duquesne?
The Dukes have lost their past eight games and ten of their past thirteen. Marhold, one of the senior leaders, has been benched for underperforming. The team’s two star players, Colter and Johnson were each held to two points last weekend at Dayton. So what is really going on with Duquesne? How can we account for the lengthy losing streak, the inability to finish games, and the inconsistencies from one half to the next? Perhaps it all boils down to the inexperience. But it is debatable as to ... Read More
Duquesne Falters in 2nd Half Once Again
Duquesne was able to open up a little bit of a lead on the road Saturday night against Dayton at University of Dayton Arena. With 7:48 left to play in the first half, the Dukes (7-13, 0-6) led the Flyers (12-7, 2-3) by a score of 20-13. But Dayton went on a 17-4 run in the remainder of the half to take a 30-24 halftime lead. The home team then went on an 11-2 run to start the 2nd half to gain a 41-26 advantage. The losing streak continues for Duquesne, who has now lost eight in a row. Credit ... Read More
Dukes Feeling Down After 73-64 Loss to Saint Louis
Pittsburgh—The game was much closer than what the scoreboard read after the final buzzer. On defense, Duquesne took measures to slow down the 3-point shooting of the Billikens’ guards, Kwamain Mitchell and Mike McCall. For the most part, they succeeded. However, free throws and turnovers ultimately were responsible for the Dukes’ seventh straight defeat. “That was a tough loss, our guys are really down right now,” Coach Ferry admitted. Duquesne guarded well on defense until the final minutes ... Read More
Graham, VCU Bury Dukes 90-63
Pittsburgh—Forget the VCU Rams, Duquesne barely outplayed Treveon Graham in the 1st half Saturday night. Graham had 17 points in the first half, almost surpassing Duquesne’s 18. The game was as good as over by the time the teams headed into the locker room. It was a night of milestones for #22 (AP) VCU. Not only did the Rams pick up their 13th straight win, but they also broke the record for most points scored by a college basketball team at Consol Energy Center. In addition, Coach Shaka ...
