Duquesne is facing off against its first ranked opponent of the season Saturday night at the Consol Energy Center. #22 Virginia Commonwealth (15-3, 3-0), who topped Saint Joseph’s 92-86 in overtime Thursday night, will come to Pittsburgh seeking a 13th straight win. Their current win streak is 2nd longest in the nation. The Rams have faced a respectable cadre of opponents this season. They are 1-2 against teams currently in the Top 25. Their quality wins have come against #19 Memphis, Dayton ... Read More
Duquesne Falls 79-66 to UMASS, Despite Career-High From Johnson
It was truly a tale of two halves. UMASS led by as many as 17 late in the first half, but saw their lead cut to three on three separate occasions in the 2nd. Against a strong UMASS team, it wasn’t enough to pull out a victory. The Dukes just dug themselves into a hole too early. Just like in the Saint Joseph’s game, Duquesne came out with a head of steam in the 2nd half. Sean Johnson led this charge, scoring 14 points in the first 4:10 of the 2nd half. 4 of these points came off of a 4-point ... Read More
Hope to be Found for Duquesne in Loss to Saint Joseph’s
Pittsburgh—Picking up a fourth straight loss always hurts. But Duquesne showed some good things against Saint Joseph’s that might inspire some hope at this low point in Duquesne’s season. Regardless of any positives, there is still much basketball left to play this season. Last Saturday, Duquesne rebounded well against a talented team with size. The scoring sheet was also more balanced, indicating they are not relying on a few individuals anymore to get things done. It is important that these ... Read More
Duquesne Falls Prey to Hawks, 74-66
Pittsburgh—Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Saint Joseph’s didn’t leave the Palumbo Center without a fight Saturday night. That was because the right Duquesne team showed up to play—the Duquesne from before Christmas break. The Dukes didn’t always play soundly throughout the night, but they were aggressive. “If we play like this, and play this hard, we’ll win some games in this league,” Coach Ferry said after the game. Unfortunately, Duquesne’s efforts weren’t fruitful. They did, however, ... Read More
Playoffs from the outside in
With the Steelers missing the playoffs and the first round over, as a fan, can we be happy with any of the remaining teams winning the whole thing? Eight teams remain and I believe the teams can clearly be lumped into two categories. The “Please don't let this team win” and “I guess I'm okay with them winning.” The “Please don't let this team win” group is the easier and most obvious of the two. The Baltimore Ravens are the Steelers most hated rival, so they are the easiest to add to the ... Read More
How Will Duquesne Fair Against Saint Joseph’s?
Pittsburgh—Does anyone remember the 2004 Saint Joseph’s team? The team that went 27-0 in the regular season and came within a single basket of making the Final Four? Surely fans who have followed the Atlantic-10 in the past decade or so have heard of them, because they were one of the finest teams the conference has seen in the past decade. Well the word on Hawk Hill is that this year's Saint Joe's team is the best they have seen since that remarkable ’04 group. Quite a lofty claim, and quite an ... Read More
Dukes Drop 3rd Straight Game
Bronx, N.Y.—The Rams matched their season-best point total as they beat the Duquesne Dukes 82-75. Fordham’s Chris Gaston had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Branden Frazier added 16 points and a career-high 13 assists. Derrick Colter was the game’s 2nd leading scorer with 17 points, also recording 9 assists. Pantophlet had 13 and Johnson racked up 12, but it wasn’t enough to stay close to the Rams. Fordham was able to go into the locker room with a respectable halftime ... Read More
2012-2013: A Step Forward or Backward For Duquesne So Far?
Pittsburgh—In sports, you can’t ignore the numbers. And when you look at the two numbers that matter most for Duquesne (the wins and losses column) it is no secret that the Dukes were enjoying more success on the court at this time last year than they are now. At the end of non-conference play last year, Duquesne was 9-5. Right now they are 7-7 and staring some tough conference competition in the face. However, when it comes to whether or not this season has been a step forward or backward ... Read More
Tip-off Event to Engage Community and Increase School Spirit at Duquesne
Pittsburgh—When a student body is united, it says a lot about a university. When it comes to college basketball, student support cannot win games—but it can help. Why has Pitt only lost twenty games at the Petersen Events Center? They have had strong fan support, starting with the Oakland Zoo. Of the many successful basketball programs in the NCAA, the best programs are the ones with great fan support. Every athletic department in the nation who cares at all about basketball should be trying to ... Read More
Another Duke Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Pittsburgh—For the third straight week, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award has gone to a Duquesne player. But this time, it’s not Derrick Colter. On December 31st, freshman forward Quevyn Winters was named co-Rookie of the Week along with Butler guard Kellen Dunham. This year is only the 4th time in school history that two Dukes have won the award in the same season, but it is the first time this has happened in a 16-team league. Damian Saunders and Bill Clark were the last two Duquesne ... Read More
