Attention sports fans throughout the western PA region: there is a third sports team in Pittsburgh. Sure, they may not be a playoff team like the Pirates, or a talent-rich powerhouse like the Penguins. They may not sell as much merchandise anymore, and sure, they haven’t won a game – not even a preseason game – in over nine months. And even that was against the Browns, so it shouldn’t really count. But the true Steelers fans don’t just jump on the bandwagon for the Super Bowls. We are fans ... Read More
The ageless defense has finally aged
For decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been known for smash mouth football. There was one thing as Steeler fans we could always rely on and that was defense. Even when their offense would struggle as it has this year, Steeler fans always knew that their defense would keep them in games. In years past, when the Steelers offense would score 20-plus points, that would secure a "W" in the win column. Hall of famers such as Lack Lambert and "Mean" Joe Greene were staples in starting the ... Read More
Steelers need to use bye week wisely
As the remainder of the NFL played yesterday and tonight, the Steelers sat and watched as they attempt to figure out what has gone wrong (or a tougher question: what has gone right?) with their 2013 season. The team sits in an unfamiliar place currently, that is to say, the cellar of the AFC North. They are 0-4 and are coming off of a heartbreaking defeat in London at the hands of the previously 0-3 Minnesota Vikings, in which Ben Roethlisberger fumbled near the goal line just as he was about to ... Cup of Joe: The Pens are 2-0. Does anyone care?
Now, that's not trying to be disrespectful at all. A good, powerful, controversial headline draws the reader to the article. Welcome aboard. Last week, it was a hockey night in Pittsburgh on two different occasions, as the Penguins kicked off its season with two wins over the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. Sidney Crosby, Chuck Kobasew and Craig Adams — yes, that Craig Adams — are all on pace to score 82 goals this year. Marc-Andre Fleury has looked great between the pipes, as he's ... Read More
Ryan Clark says the Steelers will make the playoffs. Is he right?
So, Ryan Clark thinks the 0-4 Pittsburgh Steelers can still make the playoffs? Is he watching the same team that the rest of us are? The Steelers season is upside down, and they are in a downward spiral from which they may not escape. In the first two games of the season, the offense was only able to muster a meager 19 points. True, in the past two games, they've scored 23 and 27 points, respectively. Meanwhile, the defense had given up 36 points in the first two games. In the past two, ... Read More
Has Mike Tomlin lost control of the Steelers?
Mike Tomlin certainly knows how to talk the talk. From the mouth of this gifted orator, we’ve gotten such gems as “the standard is the standard,” and constant referrals to the members of his team as “men.” Fine. Great. Sounds good, coach. How about showing a little of that spirit when it actually comes to coaching your team? Let’s face it, the days of the super disciplined coach are gone now. Tom Coughlin and Mike Shanahan are holdouts from a by-gone era in coaching, but only because they ... Read More
Bye Week Tweaks
Almost mercifully, it will be impossible for the Pittsburgh Steelers to fall to 0-5 this weekend, because...they have the week off. Coming home from one of the NFL's annual visits overseas in London, Coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are one of four teams on a bye week in Week Five. The others, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Washington, certainly have issues themselves, so this figures to be a busy week of surgical analysis for teams that are a combined 2-14 through four weeks. Tampa Bay, for ... Read More
Steelers Week 4 Report Card following loss
A change of scenery didn't help the Pittsburgh Steelers much. Another week and another disappointing loss in the books for the 0-4 Steelers. The defense was once again shelled and dug the offense, which wasn't bad again, too big of a hole too climb out of in a 34-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London. However despite the loss, there were a few bright spots along the way. Let's see how the Steelers graded out in this one. Quarterback: Ben Roethlisberger had a pretty solid ... Read More
Cup of Joe: The offense isn’t the problem
Here we are, Pittsburgh. October is a day away and the Pirates continue to be more relevant than the Steelers. For the first time since 1968, the Pittsburgh Steelers are 0-4. Yikes. With the slow start, there continues to be a need to blame someone for fans. Again, it continues to be Todd Haley and Mike Tomlin. The thing is, the offense isn't the problem. Sure, there are some calls that make you scratch your head, but over the past two games, do any bad calls really stick out to ... Read More
LC Greenwood dies at 67
Former defensive end, LC Greenwood, died Sunday afternoon at the age of 67 from natural causes. Greenwood was one of four defensive linemen that dominated the 70's, helping the Steelers win four Super Bowls in six years. Partnered with Ernie Holmes, Dwight White, and "Mean" Joe Greene, Greenwood terrorized opposing offensive lines as part of the "Steel Curtain". Joe Greene is the only surviving member from that group as White and Holmes died six months apart in 2008. Greenwood was a tenth ... Read More
