Over the years, the Pittsburgh Penguins have had continued success that has made this franchise well known throughout the sports world. Furthermore, the Pittsburgh Penguins, like any franchise have seen their share of blockbuster trades that have gone great for the organization. However, as the saying goes, the best trade is the one you don't make, as others have proven to be disastrous for the Pens. Let's look back at the five worst decisions and trades in Pittsburgh Penguins history. July ... Read More
Schenn scores twice as Flyers stymie Penguins
Brayden Schenn scored twice and Ray Emery made 30 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers won their third straight game while handing the Penguins their third straight defeat. Pittsburgh struggled, once again, on the power play (1-4) and at even strength, being shut out in five on five play for the third straight game. Sidney Crosby's line came out flying in the opening seconds of the game. Crosby was stopped on a partial breakaway before Chris Kunitz allegedly scored off his own rebound. ... Read More
Pittsburgh Sporting News names its all-time Penguin roster
The Pittsburgh Penguins franchise was founded in 1967 and in that time has been home to some of the greatest players ever to play the game. While other teams in the NHL may boast a longer history than the Pittsburgh Penguins, few can match the Penguins in their history of great players and championships. Since their inception in 1967 as part of the NHL's first expansion from six to 12 teams, the Pens have been blessed with great players and three Stanley Cup victories. As we look forward to ... Down Note: Blues drop Pens, 2-1
The Penguins dropped their second straight game, losing Saturday night to the St. Louis Blues 2-1 at the Scottrade Center. Despite getting James Neal and Beau Bennett back in the lineup, the Penguins struggled to generate offense. St. Louis held the Penguins to 20 shots including five in the third period. The lone goal came on the power play in the second period, extending Pittsburgh's even strength scoring drought to the last six periods. Both teams had strong play from their ... Read More
Rag Dolls: Rangers crush Penguins, 5-1
Despite coming into the game with a four game winning streak and facing a team that has struggled for most of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins looked more like a team going northbound on a southbound highway. The Penguins dominated much of the first period, leading in shots 10-2 and scoring chances 7-1, at one point. But the Rangers scored twice within 1:05 and never looked back. Henrik Lundqvist was stellar, particularly in the first. Lundqvist stonewalled Sidney Crosby in the opening ... Read More
Penguin of the Week: Chris Kunitz
The Penguins had another strong week, going 4-0 this past week of play. In those four wins there was a common theme: Chris Kunitz scoring a goal. None of Kunitz's goals were of great importance. He didn't win any shootouts or score on a last second breakaway goal, but he was consistent. To start the week out, Kunitz scored a goal in the Pens 3-1 win over Carolina. He had six shots on the night and finished with 2 +/- rating. His goal put the Pens ahead for the win. On Wednesday, he, again, ... Read More
Pens sweep home and home behind Zatkoff’s shutout
The Columbus Blue Jackets expected to have a tough time scoring against Marc-Andre Fleury. Jeff Zatkoff? Probably not. Zatkoff stopped all 18 shots from Columbus en route to his first career shutout as the Penguins emerged victorious 3-0 at Nationwide Arena. It was a much better effort for Zatkoff, who had given up ten combined goals in his first two starts this season, both resulting in losses. Deryk Engelland broke a scoreless tie 6:46 into the second period. Joe Vitale wired a ... Read More
Flyers, Penguins in opposite directions thanks to general managers
Over the summer, I wrote an article titled, "General Managers, The Good and the Bad." In this article, I was comparing the decision making of Penguins and Flyers general managers Ray Shero and Paul Holmgren. Furthermore, I discussed how Shero has been the standard for general managers not just in the NHL but in all major sports across the board. Shero continues to make good, solid decisions for the Pens organization. Holmgren, on the other hand, has the Flyers looking lost and desperate, most ... Read More
Pens explode for three goals in the second to down Jackets
The Penguins welcomed the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Metropolitan Division rudely, Friday night. Pittsburgh scored three goals within 4:24 in the second period and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 37 of 39 shots en route to a 4-2 victory at Consol Energy Center. Fleury was electric in the first period, stopping all fourteen shots that included back to back saves on Cam Atkinson late in the period, and unbelievable pad stop on Ryan Johansen. The Blue Jackets had two power plays in the first but ... Read More
Penguins need to address backup goalie
What's been lost in the great start that Marc-Andre Fleury is having is the fact that the Penguins don't have a reliable backup. And what happens if for whatever reason, Fleury goes down for any amount of time due to an injury? Does anyone in Pittsburgh want to see Jeff Zatkoff skating (or trying to) out to the cage every game? Sure, it's a small sample size, but so far Zatkoff has a lofty goals against of 5.06, and a meager save percentage of .818. Sure, you could trot Zatkoff out there ... Read More
