Since the age of five, I have enjoyed highs, lows, teams of historic proportion and teams I wish I could forget. Nevertheless, I have stuck by the Pens for over two decades. During my span of worship, and all depending on who you ask, I cannot recall a team more potent of talent than the one that takes the ice as of late. They have the best player in the league, along with arguably the second best player in the league. Plus, much to the disagreement of fans, the Pens have one of the most ... Read More
Pens edge Oilers on Malkin’s power play goal
The Pittsburgh Penguins have built a contending team with a nucleus of players drafted at the top of the draft. The Edmonton Oilers, not so much. Pittsburgh defeated the Oilers 3-2, Tuesday night, in a match up of young superstars. In the last ten years, both teams have combined to draft seven players with one of the top five picks. Neither team disappointed to show off the speed and skill of those players, but in the end, the Penguins came away with their fifth win in six ... Read More
Penguin of the Week: Sidney Crosby
Its hockey season and the Penguins have started out strong. So far on the season they're 4-1. This past week, they won three of their four games and it goes without saying that captain Sidney Crosby has come to play. In the Pens 4-1 win over Buffalo last Saturday, Crosby provided a goal for his team. The next two games, he provided help even though he didn't score. In the two games, Crosby added three assists. The Pens won Tuesday 5-2 but lost Friday 6-3 despite Crosby's two assists. Crosby ... Read More
Crosby shocks Bolts with eighth career hat trick
Sidney Crosby scored three times for Pittsburgh as they rebounded from a disappointing loss to the Florida Panthers the previous night. Crosby scored his third of the night mid way through the third period which set up Matt Niskanen's last minute power play goal to give the Penguins a 5-4 edge over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Valtteri Filpulla opened the scoring 13:25 into the first period for his fourth of the season. Filpulla won the offensive zone faceoff then went to the net and deflected a ... Read More
Jokinen haunts former team; nets second career hat trick vs Carolina
When GM Ray Shero made his blockbuster deals around the trade deadline last season, Jussi Jokinen looked merely like insurance if Sidney Crosby couldn't return for the playoffs. Carolina traded Jokinen for a conditional draft pick and agreed to pick up most of his salary in the process. Bad move. Jokinen's second career hat trick vaulted the Penguins over the Hurricanes, Tuesday night, en route to a 5-2 victory. Paul Martin and Tanner Glass each added their first of the season. While ... Cup of Joe: The Pens are 2-0. Does anyone care?
Now, that's not trying to be disrespectful at all. A good, powerful, controversial headline draws the reader to the article. Welcome aboard. Last week, it was a hockey night in Pittsburgh on two different occasions, as the Penguins kicked off its season with two wins over the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. Sidney Crosby, Chuck Kobasew and Craig Adams — yes, that Craig Adams — are all on pace to score 82 goals this year. Marc-Andre Fleury has looked great between the pipes, as he's ... Read More
Penguins roll over the Sabres 4-1
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 Saturday night, following the same plan that gave them their first win against the New Jersey Devils; strong defense and aggressive offense. Thanks to another strong performance by Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped 20 of 21 shots, and goals from Sidney Crosby, Chuck Kobasew, Chris Kunitz and Craig Adams, the Penguins won for the second time in as many chances. The Penguins brought the 288th consecutive sellout crowd to their feet on a ... Read More
Fleury shuts out the Devils on opening night
The NHL might have cut down the size of goalies' pads this year, but don't tell Marc-Andre Fleury. Flower and the Penguins shutout the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Pittsburgh's opening night of the season. Chuck Kobasew and Sidney Crosby scored in the first period and Craig Adams added a goal in the third to seal the deal for Pittsburgh who claimed the first two points in the Metropolitan Division. Kobasew, who was signed a few days ago after a strong showing in preseason, broke a scoreless ... Read More
Penguins still a favorite but need Fleury to get there
After adding Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow, Jussi Jokinen, and Douglas Murray around the trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Penguins were seen as a team that was "going for it" with "it" being the Stanley Cup. No offense, but when your team consists of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, etc. you're always "going for it". Regardless, the Penguins fell short of their goal of raising the Stanley Cup, failing to win a game, in the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite loading their team with ... Read More
It’s make or break for Fleury
The most enigmatic athlete in all of Pittsburgh sports right now might just be Marc-Andre Fleury. You could probably remove the might because you can argue that although his mistakes happen at the worst moments, Big Ben doesn’t have a Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin surrounding him. It seems as though most Penguins fans — even if some still have a soft spot from the 2009 Stanley Cup run — have had enough of Fleury. And those that still are willing to see what happens with him, are no longer ... Read More
