Pittsburgh Riverhounds midfielders Rob Vincent and Kevin Kerr were named to the first United Soccer League team of the week of 2015 on Tuesday.
The pair of midfielders, who were deployed on the wings in a 4-5-1 formation by head Coach Mark Steffens, combined to score all five of the club’s goals in their 5-2 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders in the home opener on Saturday.
Vincent, 24, scored two goals and assisted on two of Kerr’s tallies. The Liverpool-born midfielder led the team in scoring in preseason this year and his scoring touch has continued into the league slate. Vincent is in his third season in Pittsburgh after graduating from the University of Charleston (WV).
Kerr, 26, scored his first professional hat trick and had the game-winning goal. The Scottish midfielder is also starting his third season with the Riverhounds and now has scored eight goals in 47 appearances with the club since 2013.
“I rarely get one, so to get three was quite a surprise,” Kerr said after his performance on Saturday.
The duo seemed to play off one another, despite playing across the formation from one another.
“I didn’t touch the ball too much (Saturday), I just had great service,” Kerr added.
The full USL team of the week is available on the USL website.
A Hounds player was also in the news on Monday, when goalkeeper Ryan Thompson earned an international cap and a clean sheet for the Jamaican national team in their 3-0 win over Cuba. It was the third appearance with the Reggae Boyz for Thompson, who also started for the Riverhounds on Saturday.
Defender Tyler Pasher missed the team’s opener as he was called up to the Canadian National Team, but he didn’t get to participate in either of the team’s two friendlies.
The Riverhounds will return to action on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. when they host the Rochester Rhinos at Highmark Stadium.
