Pitt Panthers fans got some good news on Tuesday when sophomore wide receiver Tyler Boyd was back on the practice field.
The guy who running back James Conner called “the best wide receiver in college football,” gave the Panthers and their fans a scare when he dislocated a finger on his left hand returning a punt in Saturday’s 62-0 victory against Delaware.
All signs point to Boyd being ready to go when Pitt travels to Boston College on Friday.
“He practiced yesterday and he’ll practice again today,” said Pitt head coach Paul Chryst.
That’s great news for the Panthers and especially quarterback Chad Voytik, who will be making his first career road start.
In other Panthers news:
– Speaking of Conner, he and offensive lineman Matt Rotheram were honored by the ACC on Tuesday.
Conner was named the ACC’s Offensive Back of the Week after rushing for 153 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries on Saturday.
The sophomore was out of the game midway through the second quarter and scored on runs of 7, 8, 1 and 19 yards as he helped Pitt gain a 42-0 lead by intermission.
Rotheram was named the ACC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week after spearheading an attack that saw Pitt rush for 409 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 7.3 yards per carry in the rout.
It’s worth noting that in their 56 combined carries on Saturday, not one of them went for a loss.
– Speaking of the offensive line, Chryst continues to make it a priority and landed a massive recruit.
Even though they only have a few scholarships left to hand out for next season, Chryst, in a major surprise, landed Ohio offensive lineman, Rob Dowdy.
Dowdy is a four-star recruit per 247, checks in at an impressive 6’5″ and 296 pounds and 247 lists him as the nation’s No. 12 guard.
He was supposed make a decision on a school after his senior season, but in a bit of a surprise committed to Pitt early. Dowdy chose the Panthers over Miami, Michigan State, Louisville, Arizona State, West Virginia, and many others.
Pitt doesn’t have many scholarships left to hand out, but the last two commits, both out of Ohio in Dowdy and running back Darrin Hall make this upcoming class look stronger by the day.
– The Panthers got one vote in this week’s Top 25.
