When the Pittsburgh Steelers open up the 2014 regular season on September 7 at Heinz Field against the Cleveland Browns, they will have a little something extra to play for.
Former Steelers head coach Chuck Noll will be honored as the U.S. Senate has passed a resolution making September 7 “Chuck Noll Day.”
“Chuck Noll was one of the greatest coaches in NFL history and played a huge part in turning the once downtrodden Steelers franchise into the powerhouse it has been for the last 40-plus years,” Republican Pat Toomey said on the floor of the Senate (via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). “The City of Pittsburgh and football fans across Pennsylvania will miss Coach Noll.”
Noll coached the Steelers from 1969-91, winning four Super Bowl titles.
The legendary coach passed away June 13 at his Sewickley home at the age of 82.
