GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 4) – It was a very productive night in Greensburg for the Waynesburg men’s soccer team as it took on Pitt-Greensburg. Not only did the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-0 under new head coach Carl Griffiths, but they pitched their second-straight shutout during the 2-0 victory.
The win gave Waynesburg its first 2-0 start to a season since 2003 and also ended UPG’s season-long four-game winning streak. Just like their first triumph of 2012, the Yellow Jackets scored all the goals they needed for the win in the first half and then played solid defense and got a stellar effort in goal to keep the opposition off the board.
Jacket freshman Tyler Steadman broke up a scoreless tie with his first collegiate goal, which came in the 31st minute of action off a helper from junior Tim Fields. With less than three minutes to go until halftime, the visiting team got an important insurance tally from junior Danny Griebert in the 42nd minute. Sophomores Nick Brommer and Matt Kopp assisted on Griebert’s first score of the year.
Waynesburg’s two points were more than enough offensive support for sophomore Brandon Daughtry, who improved 2-0 with his second consecutive complete-game shutout. His nine saves on the evening were a personal career high.
The Jackets will try to keep their hot play rolling into the third game on their schedule, which comes on Friday, Sept. 7, at Oberlin. Start time for the contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
