The Washington Wild Things dropped to 4-14 at CONSOL Energy Park in 2015 as they dropped a doubleheader to the Frontier Greys on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1
Kyle Vazquez (0-1) started off on the wrong foot in the first game of the twin-bill allowing three runs on two hits while walking two batters in the first inning.
His command didn’t improve over his final three innings of work as the right-hander allowed two more runs on four hits which inflated his ERA to 9.58 on the season.
The five runs were plenty for Grays starter Bobby Shore (3-3), who threw six innings of shutout ball while allowing three hits in the shortened seven-inning contest due to the doubleheader.
The Wild Things had a chance to get back in the game trailing 3-0 in the third when Matt Ford — fresh off of a 20-day break due to a hamstring injury — singled with one out. Shore then hit Daniel Poma, but then got a break when Ford was thrown out at home on a Scott Kalamar single to center. C.J. Beatty then grounded out softly to first to end the threat.
Washington totaled five hits in the game and were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Starters Lines
(WAS) Vazquez (L, 0-1): 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K’s, 1 HR. 78 Pitches (49 Strikes).
(FRO) Shore (W, 3-3): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K’s, 2 HBP. 85 Pitches (52 Strikes).
Game 2
The Washington offense was again mostly silent in the second game of the doubleheader, but starter Tim Flight was able to keep them in the game until late.
Flight (2-3) had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings before Jose Sermo broke it up with a double down the left field line. He would be stranded, though, as Flight was able to get a ground out and a strikeout to end the inning.
The sixth inning didn’t go as smoothly for Flight as he allowed a leadoff single to Ben Lodge and followed that by hitting Brandon Tierney.
Flight pleaded with home plate umpire Mike Martin that Tierney leaned into the strike zone, but the call stood.
Bozzuto then pulled Flight for reliever Matt Purnell, who induced a ground out to first and another ground out to third that resulted in a play at the plate for the second out.
Purnell didn’t have the magic against Scott Carcaise, however, as the first basemen knocked a double off the right-center field wall to put the Greys (15-16) ahead 2-0.
Washington (12-21) responded in the bottom of the sixth when Kalamar led off the inning hitting an 0-1 fastball just inside the right field foul pole to cut the defect to 2-1.
It was all the Wild Things could produce, however, as starter Colin Feldtman (2-1) and Nick McBride retired the final six batters to complete the doubleheader and series sweep.
“We’re just not hitting the pitches we want. We need to zone up the pitches a little better,” said Wild Things shortstop Austin Wobrock. “Honestly, I believe we have one of the best teams out there. We’re just not running on all cylinders, right now. ”
Starters Lines
(WAS) Flight (L, 2-3): 5+ IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K’s, 1 HBP. 74 Pitches (58 Strikes).
