With the summer air settling in in western Pennsylvania, the Wild Things were able to pull out a slim victory. The Wild Things, behind Shawn Blackwell’s seven strong innings of shutout ball, rode a one to nothing lead into the winner’s circle.
Blackwell didn’t allow a single hit until the top of the fourth inning. In the first inning, he hit a batter, watched his catcher drop a third strike, and allowed a base runner to reach third base on a wild pitch, but was still able to get out of the inning without any damage.
In the bottom of the third, with two outs, Darian Standford was able to reach base on a single. Sandford then did what he did best and stole his 28th base of the season. Four pitches and three foul balls later, Shain Stoner took a pitch and drove in Sandford on a single.
That would be all the Wild Things would get for the rest of the night but that’s all they would need.
Blackwell would allow three hits, one walk and five strikeouts over his seven innings. Washington relievers would go on to not allow a single hit the rest of the night.
Second baseman CJ Beatty went 2-3 on the night and was the only Wild Thing with more than one hit.
The Wild Things will go for the sweep tomorrow in the third game of the series. First pitch is set for 5:05 pm ET.
