The Washington Wild Things knocked the ball over the fence five different times en route to a 6-4 victory over the Frontier Greys.
CJ Beatty and Quincy Latimore each hit two solo shots with Stewart Ijames adding one of his own, giving the Wild Things all the runs they would need to win the ballgame.
Wild Things starter Shawn Sanford pitched 7.0 strong innings, scattering six hits and only allowing two runs on the night. Sanford didn’t give up a single walk and struck out seven Greys batters before coming out of the game.
After the Greys put up a single run in the top of the 2nd inning, the Wild Things pulled out their lumber and never looked back.
Latimore led off the bottom half of the 2nd with a solo bomb on the fifth pitch he saw. Two batters later Ijames sounded off on his first swing of the game and sent it packing over wall, giving the Things their first lead of the contest. AJ Nunziato would drill a triple and later score on a Mario Mercedes single as the Wild Things took a 3-1 lead into the 3rd.
The Greys again added just a single run in the top half of the frame and the Wild Things picked up just where they left off. Beatty hit his first solo shot of the game, followed by Latimore’s second solo blast, putting the Things up 5-2. Beatty would homer again in the bottom of the 7th.
Sanford would have smooth sailing before coming out in the top of the 8th inning. Matt Phillips and Amalio Diaz would shutdown the rest of the 8th inning with Jhonny Montoya closing out the 9th, despite giving up two runs.
Five Wild Things registered multiple hits on the night.
The two ball clubs will face off again tomorrow evening at 4:05 from CONSOLE Energy Park.
