The Washington Wild Things, combined with a strong start by Dayne Quist and a 5 RBI performance by CJ Beatty, picked up a 7-1 win over the Gateway Grizzlies Wednesday night from CONSOLE Energy Park.
Quist pitched 8.0 strong innings, only giving up 1 run on 6 scattered hits. Allowing just two base runners through the first 5. 0 innings, Quist was able to keep the Grizzlies at bay for most of the game. The only run that the Grizzlies picked up was in the 6th after Alex Guthrie singled to start the inning and was later driven in by a Jonathan Johnson single. The Wild Things got on the board first, though, in the bottom of the third inning on a Shain Stoner single.
The Wild Things would add two more runs before the Grizzlies would score their first run of the game when Beatty hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Wild Things put up three more runs to go comfortably ahead. With two outs, Nick Bogan reached first base on a dropped third strike to get the rally going. Stoner was then walked to put two runners on. After a pitching substitution and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Beatty cleared them, driving in all three runs on a 3-1 double, putting the Wild Things up for good.
The Wild Things pitchers’, both Quist and Andy Smithmyer, would not let another Grizzlies player get a hit to close out the game and a 7-1 victory.
The two teams square off again tomorrow night at 7:05 pm ET from CONSOLE Energy Park.
