WASHINGTON, Pa. — Washington & Jefferson College junior defensive back B.J. Monacelli (Cassadaga, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) was honored as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday after leading the Presidents’ football team to a 23-6 victory at Methodist.
Monacelli racked up five solo tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and one pass breakup during the game.
With Methodist driving deep in Presidents’ territory early in the third quarter, Monacelli stripped the ball from a Monarch wide receiver and senior linebacker John Hunter (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) scooped it up and returned it 63 yards. That play helped set up W&J’s second touchdown of the game.
Monacelli’s interception came in the end zone, as he again thwarted a scoring opportunity after the Monarchs had moved the ball inside of the W&J 10-yard line late in the third quarter.
In 11 games during his career, Monacelli has accumulated 44 tackles (two for loss), two forced fumbles and one sack.
