Week 1 of the 2015 college football season is in the books and local Division III teams like W&J and Waynesburg got off to very strong starts to the season with Week 1 victories.
A pair of W&J players earned President’s Athletic Conference honors in the process as they took apart Wooster 56-10.
Junior linebacker Ryan Torrance, a Latrobe native, was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week. Torrance turned in a dominant Week 1 performance with 11 solo tackles, while playing just three quarters in the Presidents rout. He also recorded a sack and two tackles for loss. The 11 tackles were just one off of his career high, and marked the fifth time in the last six games he’s finished with double-digit tackles.
Torrance wasn’t the only W&J player that turned in a big week.
Senior wide receiver Daniel Lis was named the PAC Special Team’s Player of the Week.
Lis, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, finished with 126 yards on two punt returns, including a 93-yarder for a touchdown that broke a 26-year-old school record. It was also the first time a W&J player went over 100 punt return yards in a single game since Oct. 6, 2001. Lis finished the day with 161 all-purpose yards.
W&J remains ranked No. 14 overall in the D3football.com Top 25.
Local PAC action in Week 2 will see W&J host Westminster while Waynesburg travels to Saint Vincent. Both games are Saturday.
