Brett Brumbaugh, WPIAL’s all-time passing leader and a Duquesne University football recruit, has been charged with loitering and prowling and resisting arrest.
Brumbaugh, 18, led the South Fayette Lions to back-to-back WPIAL and PIAA Double-A titles in 2013 and 2014 and is the all-time WPIAL passing leader with 9,644 yards. In November, Brumbaugh committed to play quarterback at Duquesne University.
He also played for the Pennsylvania team in last weekend’s Big 33 game against Maryland.
According to court documents, Brumbaugh has been charged with loitering and prowling at nighttime and resisting arrest. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Pennsylvania code defines loitering and prowling at nighttime as: “ Whoever at night time maliciously loiters or maliciously prowls around a dwelling house or any other place used wholly or in part for living or dwelling purposes, belonging to or occupied by another, is guilty of a misdemeanor of the third degree.”
Brumbaugh was arraigned this afternoon. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday, June 29 at 1:00 p.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet.
The charges would carry a maximum sentence of three years in jail. Brumbaugh does not have a previous adult criminal record.
The arresting officer on file for the case is John Leininger of the South Fayette Township Police Department.
Brumbaugh comes from a family of quarterbacks. His older brother Luke will be a junior at Robert Morris and his oldest brother Christian will be a senior at William & Mary this year.
The Duquesne athletic department was did not respond to a request for comment on this story. The Dukes will open their 2015 football season on September 5 at home against Kentucky Christian.
