Lawrence Timmons has often been called a hybrid linebacker. He is Mike Tomlin’s “baby” as he was the first draft pick that Tomlin made as coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last year, he and LaMarr Woodley both signed contract extensions with the Steelers. The only problem is that Timmons was supposed to have his “breakout season” for the past three years now. It hasn’t happened yet and Steelernation has been voicing their displeasure.
When Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles came to town this past weekend, it was Timmons that stepped up for the defense to shut down the elusive quarterback and company. Timmons, who recorded nine tackles on the day, blew up the offensive line of the Eagles all day and made life tough for Vick. Along with the tackles, Timmons had four hurries, two tackles for a loss and forced an early fumble that earned him our pick for The Yinzer of the Week.
Besides making Vick’s life a living hell, Timmons was able to assist in limiting the shifty LeSean McCoy to just 53 yards on the ground at Heinz Field.
While Timmons is versatile and as athletic as they come, perhaps Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau needs to have Timmons stick to what he does best. Because after all, it is sometimes better to have a guy do one thing great, instead of a bunch of things average. With the nagging injuries to Woodley, James Harrison and Troy Polamalu, this year is as good as any for Timmons to breakout. If Sunday was any indication, he could wreak havoc all year.
