Last week, Pittsburgh Penguins winger Chris Kunitz took home the Yinzer of the Week for the second straight week. This week, however, he was dethroned by a junior forward from IUP.
Even though IUP fell short of advancing in the NCAA D2 Tournament this past weekend, Marcel Souberbielle had a fantastic showing in the three games that IUP played in.
In the first round of the tournament, he scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting. His only misses came from behind the three point line. He went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, also. In addition to his 16 points, he pulled down 8 boards, 4 offensive and 4 defensive.
He had his best game in the second round of the tournament against Slippery Rock. The forward recorded a double-double, with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He shot better from long range, going 3-5 and 6-11 from the floor overall. 9 of his 13 rebounds came on the defensive side of the floor.
In the final game, the loss to West Liberty, Souberbielle scored 12 points and pulled down 6 boards, shooting an even 50 percent from the floor and from three point land.
For the tournament, he averaged just over 14 points and a solid 9.0 rebounds per game. He also shot 53.3 percent from the floor over the course of his three games.
For the two victories, Souberbielle was a key part of the Crimson Hawks success and was named to the Atlantic Region All-Tournament team for the weekend. For that, he’s been named our Yinzer of the Week.
