The Pittsburgh Penguins were very active in the trade market this week as Ray Shero showed why he’s one of the better general managers in the NHL. For that, Shero is this week’s Yinzer of the Week.
It all started on Sunday. Shero sent Joe Morrow and a fifth-round draft pick out west and acquired a third-round pick and Stars’ captain Brenden Morrow from Dallas. The newly acquired Morrow is a lofty veteran and has been in the league for 12 years as compared to their previous Morrow, who was a rookie.
Two days later, the Pens acquired Doug Murray from the Sharks in exchange for two second-round draft picks. Murray provides solid strength for the Pens on defense now, something that Shero thought the team was lacking.
In the final move of the week, Shero went out and acquired the Calgary Flames’ captain Jarome Iginla. After it seemed that Iginla was off to the Bruins, it was reported that the Pens had in fact picked him up, and at a good price, too. Shero only gave up two college players and a first round pick.
So for the week, the Pens acquired captains from two other teams and a brute force on the defensive side. Does it get much better than that for one of the hottest teams in the NHL? We don’t think so.
That’s why Ray Shero is this week’s Yinzer of the Week.
