For the Pittsburgh Steelers, Week 1 of the 2012 season began exactly the way the 2011 season ended- a disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos. The only difference is that this time around it wasn't Tim Tebow shredding the Steelers' secondary, but Peyton Manning instead. Despite the loss, there were a few bright spots for the Steelers along the way. Here's a look at my weekly report card following the loss to the Broncos. Quarterback: Despite the late interception, quarterback Ben ... Read More
Duquesne Running Back Larry McCoy Has Eyes Set on Record Book
For a coach like Duquesne's Jerry Schmitt, having a work horse type of running back like Larry McCoy is a blessing late in games. That was evident in Duquesne's 17-7 victory over Dayton Saturday afternoon when despite struggling as on offense for three quarters, Schmitt was able to lean on McCoy to take the air out of the ball once the Dukes got a lead. "It's nice to have a guy like Larry back there," said Schmitt. "He's a hard runner and he's experienced. Larry has worked extremely hard ... Read More
Monday Morning Quarterback
Biggest Surprises Robert Griffin III and the Redskins offense was deadly, especially with Pierre Garcon as the number one receiver. Garcon showed great speed and hands on a 88 yard TD reception in the first half. The Saints D has never been known for being stingy, but RG3 would have done that to anyone yesterday. Look for them to hang in the division race longer than most expected. The New York Jets surprised the Buffalo Bills yesterday. After the starting offense did not score a touchdown ... Read More
Steelers fall short in season opening loss to the Broncos
Week one has thus far been riddled with sub-par and inconsistent officiating, and tonight’s matchup against the Denver Broncos was no exception. However, the officials didn’t force quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to toss a mind-blowing, late-game interception that all but hammered the nail into the coffin for the Steel City. Between Big Ben’s errant fourth quarter pick, pitched neatly into the hands of Bronco cornerback Tracy Porter, and a pair of last minute Denver sacks ensured the Steelers’ ... Read More
Pirates swept by Cubs
Pirates fans hopes of making the playoffs are starting to fade away as they were swept this afternoon by the Chicago Cubs. With a home stand against two of the worst ball clubs in the league, the Bucs finished with a record of 2-4. Jeff Locke had a solid start for the Pirates. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs. The bullpen did not help out his solid effort though as Jason Grilli blew the game in the top of the eighth, for the second game in a row. After the Bucs fought back to tie ... Read More
D-2 week two roundup
California The Vulcans scored the first 27 points against Kutztown but had to make a late-game comeback for a 48-45 win over the defending PSAC champions. The Vulcans scored touchdowns on four of their first six possessions. Senior running back Lamont Smith got the scoring started on a nine-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Senior quarterback Peter Lalich then connected with junior receiver Nadir Brown for a three-yard touchdown with just over three minutes to go in the ... Read More
Pirates lose in late innings to Cubs
The Pirates have lost the first two games of the series to the Chicago Cubs as they were, for the second time this year, dominated by Jeff Samardzija. The Pirates struck early against Samardzija as Pedro Alvarez drove in two runs on a single. The Bucs loaded the bases that inning, but were only able to get two. James McDonald started for the Pirates and once again was off of his game. He only pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, one of the runs coming off an Alfonso ... Read More
Waynesburg improves to 2-0 with win over Frostburg State
WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 8) – Going into Saturday’s home opener against Frostburg State, the Waynesburg University defense knew it was facing an offense that could put up points in bunches. That was proven in week one, when the Bobcats took a very entertaining 56-53 decision from Geneva College. However, FSU found the sledding a lot more difficult at John F. Wiley Stadium as Waynesburg held its opponent to just seven points on the day and methodically pounded away with its run game to score a ... Read More
Colonials drop their NEC opener to defending champion Albany
Moon Township, Pa. - September 8, 2012 - The Robert Morris University football team opened up an early lead on defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champion Albany, but the Great Danes would respond and walked away with a 35-10 decision in the NEC opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at a rainy Joe Walton Stadium. The setback to the Great Danes, who earned votes in both major national polls this past week, marked the first time in program history in which RMU dropped a NEC game in its ... Read More
Dukes Use Strong 4th Quarter to Defeat Dayton
Sometimes it’s not how you start, but how you finish. That was the case Saturday afternoon for the Duquesne Dukes, who for three quarters couldn’t get anything going offensively against the Dayton Flyers. But the Dukes’ offense came alive- scoring on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter to come away with a 17-7 win. It was the 2012 home opener for Jerry Schmitt’s Dukes, but even though it took a while, Schmitt was happy with the way Duquesne (1-1) responded after a tough Week 1 that ... Read More
