Cory Giger of the Altoona Mirror first reported yesterday that top prospect Gerrit Cole will head to AAA Indianapolis for the remainder of the season-which will include at least a first round series in the International League playoffs, as the Indians have already clinched a spot.
Cole got off to a slow start in AA Altoona, but has only allowed 5 earned runs in 33 innings over his last six starts. He has however walked ten batters in his last eleven innings pitched.
Cole is still seemingly on track to begin next year in Indianapolis, likely joining the Pirates at some point next season.
The GCL Pirates won their first ever Gulf Coast League Championship yesterday, defeating the GCL Red Sox 5-2, sweeping them 2-0 in a best of three series.
Tyler Glasnow pitched four shutout innings, allowing a hit and striking out seven.
Luis Urena hit a three run homer in the fourth, and that’s all the team would ultimately need.
Dilson Herrera and Eric Wood have since been promoted to State College. The Spikes will conclude their season next week.
Alen Hanson and Gregory Polanco have been named South Atlantic League All-Stars.
In additional honors, Polanco was chosen as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. The center fielder has hit for a .325/.389/.514 line in 422 at-bats so far this season for the Power, along with 40 stolen bases.
Hanson was named the league’s top shortstop based on a voting by SAL managers, general managers, writers and broadcasters. He leads the league in hits with 148 and has hit for a .312/.383/.532 line in 474 at-bats.
