The Pittsburgh Riverhounds know how to make themselves popular. If there’s anything Pittsburgh sports fans love, it’s when local teams sign local players. The Riverhounds did just that by signing goalkeeper Brenden Alfery to his first professional contract.
Alfery is from Cheswick, Pa. His name first became known around western Pennsylvania whenever he started playing soccer for Central Catholic high school. He then went to Grove City college for the first two years of his college career. He then transferred to Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pa.
With the Colonials, Alfery was a two year starter. In his junior year, he made 97 saves and had two shut outs against George Washington and Central Connecticut State.
Now, with the Riverhounds, he will more than likely vie for the second goalkeeper spot. Hunter Gilstrap, a longtime veteran, is the projected starter going into the upcoming season. Also on the roster is Mauricio Vargas, a Costa Rican international. Vargas and Alfery will certainly be a duo to watch in the team’s last two preseason games.
Alfery could possibly get his chance with the Riverhounds this Sunday, March 6, as they host the Ohio State Buckeyes at Highmark Stadium. The game is free of admission price and will begin at 2 p.m. The team kicks off their regular season against the Rochester Rhinos on April 2.
